History

VAL-I-PAC was founded in 1997 on the initiative of the Belgian business community to promote and coordinate recycling of industrial packaging.

Why?

The management of industrial packaging waste has been controlled in Belgium since 1997 under a Cooperation Agreement among the country’s 3 regions. This agreement imposes certain obligations on companies which put packaging on to the market. The main obligation relates to the percentage of material to be recycled (80%) and recovered (85%).
In order to meet these requirements on a centralised basis, some 50 companies from a broad cross section of industries and trade associations joined forces to establish VAL-I-PAC, a non-profit organisation accredited by the Interregional Packaging Commission.
Today VAL-I-PAC provides services to over 8,000 Belgian companies. If they wish, companies may, of course, choose to meet the requirements themselves.
