Types of companies responsible for packaging

  • Only for the packaging of products supplied to the Belgian market or unpacked in Belgium .
  • For each item of packaging, there is only one company responsible.
  • A company may fall under one or more definitions of packaging responsibility.

There are 3 types of companies responsible for packaging:

Type A
Any company which has products packaged in Belgium or has packaged them itself in order to supply them to the Belgian market is a Type A responsible for packaging.
The accounts of this type of company often contain purchase invoices for packaging material.

Type B
In the case where products supplied to the Belgian market were not packaged in Belgium, any company which has had such products imported or has imported them itself and which neither unpacks nor uses such products is a Type B responsible for packaging.
The accounts of this type of company often contain purchase invoices for products supplied by foreign companies.

Type C
In the case of industrial packaging waste not covered by A or B, anyone who unpacks or uses packaged products on Belgian territory and who is therefore responsible for the packaging waste generated, is a Type C responsible for packaging.

For example: a company which imports raw materials for its own use or a company which unpacks products to supply them in “customised packaging”, where such products have come directly from abroad (or where the company which has given the order for the products to be unpacked is foreign.
